No Child Goes Hungry is pleased to donate to the Ruth Culver Community Library in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, to support the Library’s build and installation of a little free pantry. The pantry will reside in the library’s teen section as a discreet and reliable source of extra food, meals, and snacks for community teens experiencing food insecurity.
“We consistently have kids and teens who ask us if we have snacks,” said Heather Haas, who has worked at the Library for over seven years. “Often, I give them what I have on hand for myself. I saw an opportunity to install a little free pantry at the library to help kids in need. Public libraries seek to be equalizers in communities. This project will help us do just that by nurturing kids’ minds and filling their stomachs.”
Little free pantries serve as a simple yet impactful way for neighbors and community institutions to support one another by providing essential items like food and hygiene products. They operate round-the-clock, without barriers, ensuring access to these necessities is always available. Little free pantries empower individuals to take direct action within their neighborhoods, creating a network of caring neighbors.
Haas says that the library will keep the pantry stocked with food that kids can eat in the library or take home for days and times when meals are sparse at best or missing at worst.
“Over the years, No Child Goes Hungry has helped people place little free pantries in a wide variety of locations — from school grounds to neighborhoods to fire stations and church properties,” said No Child Goes Hungry founder and director Kären Rasmussen. “Heather and the Ruth Culver Community Library team so inspire me. Libraries have long been refuges for kids, and the idea of placing a little free pantry inside to support kids in need is brilliant. I hope Heather’s story inspires more library leaders in food apartheid areas to do the same.”
