No Child Goes Hungry has donated snacks and art supplies to support the Dixie Fire Resource Center’s (DFRC) monthly Mommy and Me playdate event. DFRC is dedicated to helping survivors of the Dixie Fire fulfill unmet needs by providing services and resources in Indian Valley, California. The play dates will take place on the first Thursday of the month from April through August and will take place at the Greenville Elementary School cafeteria. The monthly events aim to unite parents and caregivers to support one another in raising children, sharing ideas, and bonding.
The Dixie Fire burned through Indian Valley in California in 2021 and other areas of Plumas County, including the Feather River Canyon and communities along Highway 89. It was the largest wildfire of the 2021 season, burning over 960,000 acres and destroying several towns, including more than 700 homes. It was also the first wildfire to cross the crest of the Sierra Nevada. The Dixie Fire started on July 13, 2021, and was extinguished on October 25, 2021.
“The Dixie Fire was a horrific tragedy,” said No Child Goes Hungry Founder and Director Kären Rasmussen.”Yet the tragedy has birthed a resilient, supportive society of survivors — including parents and children — who are rebuilding their lives and communities together. It is beautiful and inspiring, and No Child Goes Hungry is pleased to support this vital initiative.
DFRC Office Manager Martha Vaughn thanked No Child Goes Hungry for supporting the organization’s Mommy and Me event.
“We are grateful to No Child Goes Hungry and its nationwide network of donors for being part of our recovery efforts by supporting our monthly Mommy and Me event. The events are a critical part of our healing, and having healthy snacks and supplies for low-income families experiencing the greatest need is simply incredible.
