In Detroit, Michigan, the dedicated members of the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, are living out their purpose “To Be of Service to All Mankind” by ensuring children in their community have access to nourishing meals even when school is not in session.
Feeding more than 400 students each weekend through a vital meal support initiative, CHIPP (Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack), this powerhouse group of women has turned care into action. And now, with help from No Child Goes Hungry (NCGH), their impact is going even further.
The connection began when Chapter President Ra’Shanda Glenn reached out to NCGH. Glenn was inspired by the nonprofit’s mission and the shared belief that no child should ever go hungry.
“We saw the work NCGH was doing and knew immediately it aligned with our goals,” said Glenn. “We work year-round to serve children and families in need, and we’re always looking for partners who share our purpose.”
Soon after the initial application, Kären Rasmussen, Founder and Director of NCGH, responded with enthusiasm and offers of practical support.
“As a small nonprofit, I’m always looking to amplify local leaders,” said Rasmussen. “The work being done by Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Alpha Rho Omega Chapter is exactly the kind of grassroots leadership we want to uplift.”
In the weeks that followed, the two organizations collaborated to identify much-needed food and supply items for the chapter’s student meal program. Glenn and her team created a wish list which NCGH used to send boxes of food and materials from Amazon directly to Detroit.
Although the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter is on summer recess, its mission continues, and its food support efforts are already preparing to resume at full strength for the new school year.
“At No Child Goes Hungry, we believe every act of generosity counts, and when community partners come together, the impact multiplies,” said Rasmussen. “We’re honored to support the Alpha Rho Omega Chapter in their fight to end food insecurity, one weekend meal at a time.”
